Our client, a leading indigenous exploration and production company with an outstanding record of growth and landmark achievements, is seeking to recruit a Chief Operating Officer to drive operational excellence and strategic growth aspirations in line with its corporate vision.


Job Summary

The Chief Operating Officer is charged with assuring safe, efficient, cost effective and timely technical operations across all activities, from exploration to production. The jobholder will guide and lead a multi-disciplinary team of professionals in optimizing the production and resource recovery of existing and future development of company assets, and is responsible for increasing reserves and business profitability whilst ensuring adherence to regulatory and reporting requirements.

 Key Responsibilities

 Strategy, Business Planning & Performance

Develop and drive implementation of winning strategies and plans to optimize the production and resource recovery of existing and future development of the organization’s assets across locations

Develop, maintain and achieve long term production forecasts

Drive increasing reserves and business profitability

 Operational Excellence

 Assure safe,efficient, cost effective and timely technical operations across all activitiesfrom exploration to production

Lead the collation of technical recommendations towards assuring technical and operational excellence

Champion safety,sustainability and environmental affairs management in all operations

Resource a fit-for-purpose subsurface and surface operations technical) organisation

Liaise with the finance unit to ensure the unit operating costs per barrel are within NNPC recommended ratio

Embed a proper technical planning system in the organization

Take a lead role in championing new technology where appropriate

§ Drive the development, documentation, implementation and/or improvement of key processes,workflows, and best practices in resource development and management

 Project Management

 Champion secondary recovery processes and projects

Oversee reservoir characterization to enhance performance predictions to support the Annual Operating Plan AOP), strategic plan, reserves process and the asset management plan

Actively participate, coordinate efforts and communicate with joint venture counterparts

Coordinate and manage capital programs

Coordinate related entities along with functional counterparts to ensure internal learnings are shared, best practices are followed, and technical initiatives are implemented

Oversee and ensure all work meets high technical standards

 Regulatory Compliance & License to Operate

 Monitor and ensure adherence to the reporting requirements of joint venture partners, government,and relevant bodies

Drive compliance with standards, regulations and sound practices in subsurface and surface operations

Risk Management

 Identify major risks, define and implement mitigation plans, and monitor performance.

Undertake risk assessment, risk and uncertainty analysis, supporting decision analysis; and enhance the operating strategy to maximize resource recovery

Maintain asset integrity

Promote Health,Safety, Environment & ER HSE&ER) programs in line with organizational culture and values

 Team Leadership

  Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team including drilling, reservoir, completions, geology and surface/facilities disciplines in a direct or indirect relationship)

Establish clear team goals and objectives; drive performance and achievement of results

Ensure the team is resourced appropriately

Coach; mentor;facilitate development

Foster and maintain an environment that facilitates transparency, respect and cooperation


 B.Sc. in a relevant discipline or earth science including Petroleum Engineering, Geology or Geophysics

Minimum of 20 years oil and gas experience with 15 years in subsurface disciplines and at least 10 years in senior management capacity; experience as COO or MD of a medium-size EP company would be an added advantage

Experience working with regulatory agencies in the oil and gas industry including working knowledge of NAPIMS, DPR and NNPC

Results oriented,decisive and self-motivated with ability to deliver desired results safely, on time and on budget while maintaining and enhancing relationships

Experience working in a multi-cultural environment would be an added advantage
